The powerful Atlantic surf pounding the bare coast at Prouts Neck, Maine, gave Homer the main subject of the dramatic paintings of his last decades. The Cleveland Museum of Art says this one, which he called the best picture of the sea that he had painted, was first imagined as a watercolour.

He made it in oil after almost twenty years away from the medium. He patiently waited for the right atmospheric conditions and worked on it in four sessions spread over two years, from 1900 to 1903.

The painting measures about 77 by 127 centimetres without its frame. The waves and the sky take up almost the entire picture, and there are no people.

What to look at. Look at the foam on the rocks and then at the light in the clouds.
