Xiao Yuncong travelled in his lifetime to Nanjing and Yangzhou, cities in the fertile, water-rich Jiangnan region, and that region shows in his paintings. The Cleveland Museum of Art says he painted from nature, and his landscapes are shaped by the seasons and by his travels, as well as by his experience as a designer of prints.

His fresh, light colours reappear in later paintings of the Shanghai school. This album was once owned by Li Yufen in Yangzhou and later by Wu Hufan in Shanghai. Collectors added their red seals to the margins over time, so the leaf also carries a record of its owners.

The leaf is small, about 21 by 16 centimetres, in ink and light colour on paper, and was made in 1668.

What to look at. Look for the red seals and the inscription, then at the light colour in the landscape.
